The pigment known as emerald green, also identified by names such as Schweinfurt green, Paris green, Vienna green, imperial green, and Brunswick green, was utilized so extensively by the artist Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) that it became known in France as "vert Paul Véronèse." Commercial production of this toxic, arsenic-based pigment did not commence until 1822. Despite its toxicity, it was employed in wallpaper manufacturing and, by the 1860s, was implicated in numerous deaths due to arsenic fume inhalation.
