Cultural Notes
The word first bursts into the English record in the mid-1600s (OED citations point to James Howell’s Familiar Letters around 1645, originally spelled baggammon). It is a compound of two words: Back (adverb/noun) Gammon (a low-Germanic/Middle English survival of gamen, which simply means "game").
