The dictionary presents Georgian lexical units grouped by conceptual and semantic relationships, together with their English equivalents.
This thematically organized dictionary aims to document, systematize, and make the Georgian lexical landscape accessible to the international English-speaking community, while also providing rich material for empirical and theoretical research across disciplines. Rather than simply listing translation equivalents, the dictionary classifies words according to semantic fields. This concept-oriented approach turns the resource into a genuinely digital, semantically structured tool.
A major advantage of the dictionary is its bidirectional search functionality. Users can search from Georgian to English or from English to Georgian. This design serves both receptive and productive needs, making the dictionary equally useful for Georgian speakers learning or working in English and for English speakers engaging with Georgian.
The dictionary is being developed collaboratively by the TSU Department of English Philology, the Department of Translational Lexicography at the Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguistics, and the TSU Department of Computer Science.
Grouping words by semantic fields offers Georgian students and foreign Kartvelologists a more natural and effective way to learn and understand vocabulary. The structure helps users perceive the unique semantic organization of Georgian and highlights cross-linguistic and cultural differences. The dictionary provides ready-made semantic models that are particularly valuable for translators, researchers, language teachers, and students. This approach is especially beneficial in second-language teaching, as conceptually organized vocabulary improves both retention and accurate use.
The search function allows users to look up Georgian words or phraseological units as well as their English counterparts. Georgian headwords are the primary entries, but the platform also supports direct searches in English.
Thematic Group and Subgroups: First-, second-, and/or third-level categories based on semantic annotation.
Morphosyntactic Information: Part of speech, genitive forms (for nouns), and detailed grammatical information for verbs (e.g., tense, voice, version). For instance, the entry for იმწარებს (imtsarebs) includes: present tense, active voice, subjective version.
Numbering: Homonymous headwords are distinguished by Arabic numerals and treated as separate entries.
Cultural Notes: Explanations of Georgian cultural context, social pragmatics, and extralinguistic information where relevant.
Metainformation: Synonyms and cross-references that show paradigmatic relationships between headwords.
How often is it updated?
The dictionary is maintained as a living resource and updated on an ongoing basis. New entries are added as they are verified through research and collaboration. The editors of the dictionary hope that this pilot version will serve as a useful practical resource. We greatly appreciate any constructive feedback and suggestions from users, which will help guide the final development of the dictionary.
