Georgian root ლალი (lali) is a medieval loanword from Arabic/Persian (la'l). Historically, la'l did not refer to the corundum ruby we know today, but specifically to the Balas ruby (red spinel) mined in the Badakhshan region (modern-day Afghanistan/Tajikistan). This etymology is deeply embedded in Georgian classical literature. In Shota Rustaveli’s 12th-century epic, The Knight in the Panther's Skin (Vepkhistqaosani), the term ლალი is frequently paired with ბადახში (Badakhshi—referring to its origin) to create a poetic standard for radiant beauty, particularly describing lips.
