Madder is an ancient bright natural red dye from the plant Rubia tinctorum used in Egyptian tombs and brought to Europe at the time of the crusades; colour from madder dyes or pigments; frequently used with a defining word, for example, crimson madder (Turkey red), madder black, madder brown and madder rose.
